New Wines from the New World

Sula Selections (import arm of Sula Vineyards) in association with Kumala wines, welcomes Ben Jordaan, Kumala winemaker to Mumbai.

What was the event?

An evening with award-winning winemaker, Ben Jordaan, official winemaker of South Africa’s Kumala Wines, over new wines and yummilicious appetizers at the Hipcask office.

What happened?

Jordaan gave a sneak peak in the history and art of wine-making in South Africa, fast emerging as a wine destination. Interestingly, the winemaker said Kumala Wines, “in a way are like the Coco Cola of the wine industry” as they create close to 30 million litres of wine every year. The centre of attraction of the evening also the four single-varietal styles of Kumala wines – Sauvignon Blanc 2015, Chardonnay 2014, Shiraz 2014 and Pinotage 2014. The South African label will be distributed and marketed by Sula Selections in the local market.

What I liked?

Jordaan had said Kumala wines was “fun” and not “overcomplicated” and he was right there. From the four styles, my personal favourites were the fruity forward, light bodied Sauvignon Blanc and the Pinotage. In specific I liked the Pinotage as it had what I looked for wines from the western cape region! It was a dry style filled with blackberry notes, smooth tannins and full bodied texture that could stand upto to full flavoured foods

And it is affordably priced at Rs 1,199 onwards in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.

Why you should try Kumala wines?

Good wines that are reasonably priced and stands up to the southafrican pride!
